Welcome to the first post in the Single Mom Boss Series. This series will be news to you if you didn’t read my last post “Why I’m No Longer Posting About The Past”. But, this new Single Mom Boss series will feature a new boss mom. Discovering the positives of parenting alone while beating the stereotypes every week.
This week features Single Mom Boss and owner of Baked by Laura.
I have never done an interview style post on the blog before, but I see the importance of supporting Single Mom Boss’s in a similar position to me. I guess we all want similar things for our children and I think that’s one of the best things to have in common. Anyway, enough of my waffling, I asked the owner of Baked by Laura 10 questions about life as a single mother and business owner and here’s what she had to say;
1. TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND BAKED BY LAURA?
My name is Laura (Obviously, lol) and I’m 28 years old. I have just received a qualification in Professional Cookery after studying at college. I am so passionate about cooking. More than anything though, I love to bake and this year, in particular I realised I’m actually pretty good at it. So, as a result of more and more people enquiring about my cakes and gaining the necessary qualifications, I decided to take baking as a profession much more seriously. I’m also a huge foodie and anywhere I go, I’m eager to get stuck in and try new foods, which I think is a trait that has come with age.
2. HOW MANY CHILDREN DO YOU HAVE?
I’m a mom to two beautiful girls, Esmèe (5) and Eliza (4).
3. HOW DO YOU JUGGLE SINGLE MOTHERHOOD AND BAKED BY LAURA?
I literally take day to day life in my stride. When business is hectic, I can get frustrated at times and it can all get a little out of hand. Honestly, I have no real routine but for me 8 hours sleep per night is a must lol. If I don’t get my eight hours my whole day can be a mess. Sleep deprivation is my worst nightmare and some nights I’m up baking and decorating cakes which isn’t the best but to get past this I have to prepare mentally, and I think that’s so important. Like any other children, the girls can be a handful.
I try to ensure, most of my orders are for weekends which means no school run and no need for an early night. If, however I take on week day orders, I prepare a quick dinner while Esmèe is at school and the ingredients are weighed out and ready. Intricate details are always done the day before the cake. I believe preparation is definitely key. Of course, I’d prefer not to have the girls running around me or calling mom when I’m trying to get a cake done and usually they’re quite understanding. But on the off chance they are having a bad day I will give them their tablets or some coloring to do. The main thing really, is that we get through it
4. WHATS THE HARDEST THING ABOUT JUGGLING MOTHERHOOD AND BAKED BY LAURA?
I’d say the hardest thing juggling the girls and business is time. Obviously, I’m on my own so keeping them occupied and having cake orders to do can be really tricky. My Nan plays a key role in Baked by Laura, as she will come over and entertain Esmèe and Eliza sometimes. As well as that my eldest daughter Esmèe was born with a condition called TOF, this can be a struggle when she’s off school or in hospital because she can become very ill out of the blue.
5. WHAT INSPIRED BAKED BY LAURA?
I think I’ve somewhat answered this in question one but, I’ve always loved a good sweet treat. My sweet tooth could be worse, but I do like to indulge from time to time lol. I grew up with an amazing cook and baker, so I learnt a lot even if it was from a distance. Once I had Esmèe, I started baking and cooking with her a lot. We would bake anything from Lemon drizzle cake to fairy cakes and my family and friends would love them. I then started baking birthday cakes for family and close friends and soon I realised it was my passion.
I’d finally found something I enjoyed, and was good at. I also wanted to do something that could work around school time and fit in with being a single parent. At the same time, I realised that as much as, I as a mom need to put my girls first. I also have dreams and in order for them to have a good life I need to work hard and achieve as much as I can even if it does mean I’m less present than usual, starting Baked by Laura was a no brainer, really.
6. WHATS THE BIGGEST THING YOU’VE ACHIEVED AS BAKED BY LAURA?
One of my business goals when I created Baked by Laura almost a year ago was to bake for events. Myself and my cakes have been present at 5 events and that has to be my biggest achievement yet. My biggest achievement personally has to be confidence growth. Even if I do something and it’s not perfect. I’ve learnt it’s not the end of the world. I’ve also realised practice makes you better and perfect in your own right.
7. DOES ANYONE IN YOUR FEILD INSPIRE YOU?
I have a long list to be honest. I’m always in awe of what people create. I don’t think there is a limit when it comes to something as creative as decorating cakes. The two bakers that inspire me and come to mind instantly are @leticiabakes and @chefcillacasey.
8. WHERE DO YOU PLAN ON TAKING BAKED BY LAURA?
I have so many plans for Baked by Laura. Most of which I’d like to surprise you with, so make sure your following me on instagram to be the first to know. On a personal level I’m planning on going to university. I want to be an Environmental Health Inspector. Which until six months ago wasn’t even in my thoughts but I now want more out of my career as well as my business. I have realised it’s ok to want more and I seriously need to stop settling for the bare minimum. Of course, I will continue to grow and push my business to the limit.
9. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE CONSIDERING FOLLOWING YOUR FOOTSTEPS?
If I could give any single mom with a dream advice it would be to do what makes you happy! Take risks, and stay focused. A happy mommy makes happy children and trust me I’ve learnt the hard way. I haven’t always understood the importance of my happiness when it comes to being a mom. But, I am Laura, I am a baker, I like to get my nails and hair done but that doesn’t stop me from being a great mom. So, my advice to you would be don’t ever lose yourself.
